2018 Madla Natural Area March 24 Fundraiser
Organizers of the 2018 Madla Natural Area Spring Fundraiser are sending out an urgent S-O-S – that is, they want you to help Save Our Stars!
While many people realize how important Madla Park is as a natural recreation area, or in protecting our endangered wildlife, few understand, however, that it is also considered one of the best places in a major metropolitan area to gaze out upon the night sky and marvel at our cosmic past. And so we need your help to preserve this special 42-acre piece of the Milky Way for our stargazing future.
With a projected growth of over one million additional people to the San Antonio area by 2040, if we’re not vigilant about preserving our natural areas and controlling light pollution, then our children and grandchildren will soon only be able to see the stars on their screens. But light pollution affects more than just stargazing; scientific studies show that it also negatively impacts the environment, human health and even nighttime military activities, (not to mention being a huge waste of energy and money).
So we’ve invited Bill Wren — a Dark Sky Preservationist from UT’s McDonald Observatory to be our keynote speaker at this year’s fundraiser. Bill was recently featured on ‘CBS Sunday Morning’ program, where he was referred to as “the Angel of Darkness” for his efforts in protecting the night skies of Texas.
